Can you get married in Israel if you are still civilly married to somebody else outside of Israel?

Are you able to get married in Israel if you are already married to somebody outside of Israel?

Believe it or not, this question has come through my office doors in various different flavors, many times throughout the years.
Whether it’s the Israeli who got married in the U.S. to get a green card and then ended up coming back to Israel, or the Russian who made Aliyah just leaving their non-Jewish spouse back in Russia because they didn’t want to move to Israel, or the American woman who ran away from her abusive husband in California and made Aliyah.
In short, the answer is that you cannot get married in Israel if you are married to somebody somewhere else.

This has actually given me some interesting work – e.g. how do you get divorced from woman living in the Ukraine who you have no contact information for? What do you do if your ex- spouse was a Muslim and now lives in Jordan? Etc.

Check out my latest video and see what I have to say on the subject.

If you find the video interesting or useful, please like it and share it with your friends so that they too can have access to this information.
