How does court ordered divorce mediation work?

Sometimes the court hearing your divorce will order that you go for mandatory mediation. What does this mean?  What if you don’t want to go?  What happens inside the mediation room?

It really isn’t a scary process, and many times it helps the couple to preserve their relationship for after the divorce – which is especially important if children are involved.
